A New Instructional Mobile Welding Lab for Wyoming Inmates Now Open for Business
The Wyoming Department of Corrections last week celebrated the completion of the new instructional mobile welding lab that will be used for training inmates.
At the ribbon cutting ceremony in Cheyenne, Betty Abbott, WDOC Education Programs Manager, explained welding is a skill that can be very important to bring to Wyoming inmates because there are jobs available, those jobs are open to ex-felons, and they pay a livable wage.
She says, and I’m quoting
“We know that 95% of Wyoming inmates leave prison at some time and we’re always looking for job skills that will help them obtain jobs that will keep them out of prison, supporting their families, and being productive citizens,” End Quote
The welding lab has stations for 5 students at a time, and will be used at three institutions on a rotating basis: the Wyoming Women’s Center (WWC), the Wyoming State Penitentiary (WSP), and the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution (WMCI). The department has a stand alone welding facility at the Wyoming Honor Conservation/Boot Camp (WHCC). Eastern Wyoming College has approved welding certification for all inmates who complete programs at the WWC, WMCI and WHCC. The department is working with Central Wyoming College to provide that same certification to those inmates at the WSP.

The Torrington Volunteer Fire Department is inviting the public to a grand opening of its new fire station at 2001 West C St. on Friday, July 23 from 5-7 p.m. or until tours are finished.
The event is held in conjunction with a Goshen County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours social. Firemen will serve free hamburgers, hotdogs and non-alcoholic beverages. Residents, including those with children, may take guided tours inside the newly constructed building. Firemen will block off the fire station grounds to keep the area in front of the exit doors clear should they receive an emergency call. Those attending are asked to park along the streets.
Demolition of the fire hall’s north half began about two years ago. Once construction on the north side was finished, the south half was torn down and the second phase completed. Remaining work includes alley work and removal of a storage building to the east. A video of the demolition and construction will be shown inside during the tours.
A formal dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting May 15 was for invited guests.
The Chamber Business after Hours and TVFD open house is intended for public viewing.
