Goshen Cattlewomen are pleased to announce that “Goshen County Legacy of Brands, Volume II,” has been published. Published by Nebraska Printworks, Ogallala, Nebraska, the book completes the history of brands on the wall of the Brand Room in the Rendezvous Center at the Goshen County Fairgrounds. The project, began in 1992 when the Cattlewomen approached the Goshen County Fair Board and Goshen County Commissioners to ask that a room in the new building being planned for the fairgrounds be utilized to display historical brands.
Both entities approved the project, and Darlene Splittgerber, who conceived the idea and was Brand Room committee chair, began collecting branding irons from county ranchers and families of brand owners who wished to participate in the project. She took the branding irons to John Rose in Lingle, Wyoming, who applied the brands to 12”x12” leather squares. These squares were placed in wooden frames across the south wall of the new Brand Room. Wheatland artist Gertrud Goetz carved a territorial map and a display of historical brands which were also placed in the room. The project was then continued on to the north wall of the Brand Room. The north wall brands were hand-tooled by Dave and Ronda Pollat. Histories of 151 of the brands were collected and compiled in to a book published in 1998. The most recent book contains histories of 39 of the brands on the north wall.
Histories were submitted or approved by brand owners who wished to participate. It should be noted that histories were not submitted for all of the brands on the wall, but most are included. Those who have histories in the books are entitled to both books, and can obtain their copy of the volumes they do not already have from Angie Babcock during the Goshen County Fair either Wednesday, July 28 – 1 -3 p.m. in the Frontier Shelter, or Thursday, 1-2 p.m. in the lobby of the Rendezvous Center.
